Proud of her Sebastes is an original work by Pauline Larouche , from her Sport series .

Created using acrylic and mixed media techniques, with collage of art paper and mortar on gallery canvas, this 15 x 30 inch painting tells the story of a particularly memorable end to a day of fishing.

At the center of the artwork, a young fisherman proudly holds his rockfish , a small smile playing at the corners of his lips revealing the satisfaction of a successful catch. This smile alone conveys the emotion of the moment: the patience, the anticipation, the effort, and finally, the joy of a fine catch. For it is not every day that Mother Nature bestows such an honor upon us.

Material plays a significant role in this creation. The textures incorporated into the background inspired the artist to create the character's hood and scarf . Pauline Larouche had also incorporated fish-like textures into the mortar. Throughout the creative process, several fish took shape, but only one ultimately survived to find its place in the artwork.

The vibrant red of the Sebastes immediately catches the eye and contrasts with the cooler hues of the winter landscape. The textures give the garment, the landscape, and the fish an almost tactile dimension.

Created during Pauline Larouche's artist residency in Bardsville in September 2026 , this work celebrates fishing, patience, perseverance and above all those privileged moments when humans find themselves in direct contact with nature.

Proud of her Sebastes is a painting that tells a story: that of a day where the wait was worth it and where the pride of a good catch becomes a precious memory.
