"We Lost Our Balloons" is an original character work created in 1987 by Quebec painter Pauline Larouche . Part of the "Character" series, this creation demonstrates an intuitive approach where the imagination arises directly from the material.
Painted on a black gel background, the artwork gradually revealed itself. With each spontaneous layer of color applied, a spectacular head of hair emerged, followed by a second figure that seemed already to inhabit the canvas. This working method, guided by forms and textures rather than a preparatory drawing, leaves ample room for emotion and discovery.
The day before she created it, Pauline Larouche watched the television special La vie en rose by singer Diane Dufresne. The artist's flamboyant, feathered hairstyle remained etched in her imagination and inspired the exuberant hairstyle of the main character. The next challenge was to give meaning to the two silhouettes and their circular movements, reminiscent of balloons carried by the wind, hence the poetic title On a perdu nos ballons (We Lost Our Balloons ).
This work oscillates between dream, theater, and childhood memory. The characters seem suspended in a universe where fantasy takes precedence over reality. The vibrant colors contrast with the dark background, creating an inner light that immediately draws the eye.
With its expressive style, this canvas brings a strong artistic presence to a contemporary, eclectic, or classic interior. It invites everyone to invent their own story and rediscover a part of their imagination.
